BIG!Blooms Lumber Pick-Up

Yesterday Heather and I spent the morning outside completing one of the early steps of city garden construction:  acquiring lumber for raised beds.  Our partnership with BIG!Blooms supplied half of the necessary lumber.  All we had to do was get to the warehouse in Astoria to pick it up!  Check out the outdoor storage space below:

Used scaffolding storage at Build it Green!
The name Build it Green! NYC has bounced around Sprout's collective subconscious for the past year, and we were psyched to finally see the place and all that it has to offer.  Build it Green! has been supplying New York City with recycled building materials for almost ten years.  It recently started the BIG!Blooms initiative, supplying recycled scaffolding to school gardens.  Not only do they provide materials to school gardens free of charge, they also divert waste from landfills.  Thanks a lot, guys!

To transport the wood, we relied on another oft-sighted New York City organization, zipcar; although, for our endeavor ziptruck is more appropriate.  Heather and I (safely) moved the wood from Queens to Brooklyn uneventfully.  Our haul:

We're looking forward to our Build Day on March 31, when this lumber turns into homes for raspberries, strawberries, hearty greens, and herbs.  We're also still looking for volunteers for the day; please let us know if you want to help!
