Yesterday we had a productive Garden Club meeting at the Green School. We spent the meeting outside; it made sense to take advantage of the incredibly warm weather NYC has had this week! The meeting started with some plans for the March 31 Build Day. Please email us at sproutbrooklyn@gmail.com if you want to volunteer.
The students, teachers, Sprout Farm and its volunteers are excited to build some raised beds and get plants in the ground. The students are tending collards, cilantro, broccoli, lettuce and zinnia seedlings in the school's library. King's County Nursery is supplying strawberry, raspberry and blackberry plants, which will be put in the ground on the March 31 Build Day.
A sizable part of the meeting was spent making our plant list for the Grow NYC Plant Sale. The students chose between ten heirloom tomato varieties, and we're grateful to Grow NYC for their reasonable prices and pick-up locations.
After figuring out what plants we needed, we checked the garden for rat burrows (still zero, thankfully). The end of the meeting was spent painting. The students and Sprout touched up the apple mural and painted an informational sign on the blank side of the compost box.
