We had a Garden Club meeting on Wednesday, April 4th. Unfortunately we had a low student turnout so we were only able to construct one more raised bed. Now that Lyons students and faculty have become more involved in the project, we need to reassess our schedule so they can attend weekly meetings.
Next week is spring break for the students so one of the garden club members volunteered to take home the trays of sprouts to make sure they get daily watering and spend an hour a day outdoors to harden them before they get transplanted to the raised beds.
We spent most of the meeting outside, composting, building a raised bed and watering the plants and seed that were planted last Saturday. We are working to create a regular watering schedule, the students have volunteered to come out at lunch to water the plants.
Another major task for Sprout is building our board of directors. We need to build a larger group of dedicated members that can help take on tasks like media relations/PR, summer programming, outreach, fundraising, grant writing, finances, etc. Right now we are doing all of these things with a very small group. It would be great to be able to expand a bit and have the work load distributed a bit more so we could do each of those things more effectively.
