Gaynor Garden - June 13

Garden view from south-west corner
Today was a fruitful afternoon at garden club.  We cleared out a lot of the arugula, which is getting lost in between the tomatoes in bed 9.  We left some of the arugula plants in place, since they're keeping the weeds at bay and we'd like to let some go to seed to save for next year.  We harvested some of the lettuce and scallions, to make more room other plants.

We spoke at length about the end-of-school year Harvest Party on June 27, especially the problems we've had finding a time convenient for everyone.  We've decided to have open gardening time starting at 1 PM, with light refreshments from 4-7 PM.  At the party we hope to welcome many new faces into the garden.

We just got a compost crank, and spent some time turning the compost today.  One bin has almost completely transformed to compost, which we're looking forward to using to fertilize the growing plants.

We also spoke with Mrs. P, one of the cafeteria workers.  After lamenting the disconnection between the school calendar and the growing calendar, we discussed using the lettuce and herbs in the cafeteria salads.  Even though there is only two weeks left to this school year, we anticipate much more crops to share with the cafeteria in September.
