Volunteering

On March 30th and 31st, I volunteered for Sprout Farms. Digging up flower bulbs so that we could re-plant them elsewhere, I learned how tenaciously they weave their strong little roots into the dirt. I also discovered a new type of transparent grub-like bug I'd never seen before. I'm a big creature-nerd, and in my nearly thirty years living in NYC, I hadn't ever dug below the surface of the city, and didn't even know these bugs existed. I also learned a lot about urban gardening in general, for instance, that if the soil below the raised beds isn't of the best quality, you lay down fabric called root-barrier to keep the roots from growing down past the raised beds. Working with the other volunteers was an especially great experience. Everyone worked so hard and jumped in wherever a pair of hands were needed. Seriously impressive teamwork! I will definitely be at the next volunteer day, Saturday, April 21st, and encourage everyone to come!
