Gaynor Garden - June 20

It was a hot day for gardening; we managed to have a great meeting anyway this afternoon.  We mixed worm castings into four of the raised beds in an effort to boost the health of the onions, herbs, potatoes and peppers.  Potato pieces were put into the ground (bed 14) and cilantro seeds were sown (bed 5).  The first tiny dill sprouts have come up in bed 5.

We snacked on sugar snap peas straight off the vine and pulled a few carrots up.  The students were surprised and delighted with both, saying that the carrots were "much better" than the baby carrots in the cafeteria.  We also took home lettuces, scallions and carrots for salads and basil for pretty much everything.

Part of our time today was spent in the Green School library, brainstorming about the garden's summer and fall needs.  We spoke about future building projects, organizing the Garden Club notebook, the (yet-to-be-created) roof garden, and reaching out to new students in the fall.  Garden Club ended with a visit to Sergio, who runs the deli across the street from the school.  Sergio has offered his popular fares for the party next Wednesday.  (The details for the party are: 4-7 PM at Gaynor Garden, located on the corner of Manhattan Avenue and Stagg Street Walk in Brooklyn.)  We hope to see you next Wednesday!
